With the world becoming a global market and complex, several rules have emerged to ensure that workers are treated equally and obey the standards laid down by the governments or other authorities. In addition to that, workplace diversity has also led to changes in the working system, making it dynamic and unpredictable at times.
The set of working and labor laws encompass the laws that ensure equal pay and rights for employees and the limitations when hiring minorities’ employees. Some of these laws are discussed below:
1. Disabilities Act:
The Disabilities Acts provides protection to a disabled but qualified individual to seek a job where the disability will not interfere with his or her work. No public or private organization can reject that individual on the basis of disability if that person is qualified enough for the job.
Employers are also not asked to ask about the disability or perform a medical on them that other candidates are not already made to undergo. However, it is the employer’s right to ask the candidate if he or she will be able to perform the task without hindrance due to the disability.
2. Equal Pay Act
The Equal Pay Act ensures that men or women that work in an organization have the same sets of skills, effort, and responsibility and work under similar conditions should get equal remuneration for their work. In addition to that, women who discover that they have been paid less than their male counterparts for a given amount of time may file a complaint against the employer and request back wages or increased pay.
In the light of these Acts, it can be seen that workplace diversity needs to be dealt with on equal terms. Men and women need to be provided equal remuneration for the same kind of work for the same amount of time.
3. Fair Labor Standards Act:
The Fair Labor Standards Act provides a detailed regulation about the duration of work days as well as the breaks that an employer must provide to the employee. The fair amount of pay has also been discussed and some overtime hours permissible by the Federal Government, have been stated.
Due to these laws, no employer can make an employee work more overtime than necessary, or provide them with less amount of pay than that stated in the legislation. Violation of these rules may be subject to legal claims by the employee.
